Touring the Air Force Museum with my friend Drew Bowe and a very knowledgeable museum guide.

Dayton, Ohio & Wright Patterson Air Force Base

Well, after such a great time in Pittsburgh it is another place I want to add to my list of places to return too! I found the city both charming and interesting. The hotel was absolutely beautiful and harked back to the time Amelia was in the neighborhood (her hotel is now the University of Pittsburgh Student Union). I must confess I dropped my traveling companions for some really good room service food and got a good night?s rest.

At breakfast at least eight people recognized me from the local paper and TV news broadcasts. I must say, the media in Pittsburgh were very accurate and their stories were quite good. I think if you cut and paste the link you can see it: http://www.post-gazette.com/regionstate/20010906earhartreg3p3.asp I also found that we were in the USA Today, that?s really neat. I hope Amelia would approve.

The departure went well and we headed for Dayton and the Wright Patterson Air Force Base. What a thrill to land at such an historic place which today has over then thousand Air Force personnel working there. It has been continuously operated as an airbase since even before Amelia landed there. And when she was there she toured the hangars as we did today. They put her airplane in one of their hangars back in 1928 and they put mine in one today as well! What a site to see the little Avian in a hangar big enough to hold a 747!

We had a very nice reception hosted by the base commander and met a lot of wonderful people who had come to see the Avro arrive. I can?t say enough good things about Wright Patterson and neither could Amelia. When she was there, base personnel drove her to her hotel. well guess what! When I arrived, I too was given a ride to my hotel by a charming Air Force man (a volunteer as I was told).

We had a fantastic tour of the Air Force Museum with a gentleman who must know about every single plane in there. He was just great and so was the museum. I was also surprised to see a good friend, Drew, who heard I was going to be there and had flown in ?just to say hello? -- we had a great reunion. Drew knew the place well and said we would enjoy the tour. He was right! If you haven?t seen it, be sure to put in on your ?to-do? list. No wonder Amelia liked Wright Patterson and Dayton so much.

We are definitely keeping an eye on the weather for tomorrow for Terre Haute and Belleville. Say a little prayer for good weather, OK! Hopefully we won?t run into rain (my wooden propeller doesn?t like that). I?m leaving at 6:00 a.m. so I have to get some sleep. Good night!
