Announcement Expected Wednesday around 5 pm

The wait continues though there are indications some VFR flying may be released this evening or at least an announcement is to be made by the FAA.... stay tuned!

Also, be sure to check the nw posting about "Carlsbad Cavern Visit 1928 & 2001" and the new "Photo Album - 3" which were posted today.

The Amelia Earhart flight continues to be delayed while the FAA evaluates opening airspace for airplanes flying under "visual flight rules" (VFR). We cannot predict for certain when we will be able to resume our flight. We have been hoping the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will authorize "VFR" flight soon, and we will be able to resume our westward journey very soon. Wednesday evening there is upposed to ba an announcement giving us more information. We simply have to wait; we will keep you posted right here as more information becomes available.

Small airplanes, like the Avro, fly by what is called ?visual flight rules? (VFR). This means the pilot does not talk to air traffic controllers and so is not under their direct control. In other words, a pilot like Carlene flying under ?visual flight rules? flies from airport to airport and calls are made on the radio only upon arrival in the vicinity of an airport. These types of ?VFR? flights are still suspended by the FAA.

In order to fly at this time, the FAA says an airplane must be flying ?on instruments?, continuously following directions from air traffic controllers on the ground. This requires special equipment in the airplane and a pilot specially licensed to fly under ?instrument flight rules? (IFR). That means most small planes, including the Avian, can?t fly right now. Actually, other than airliners and more sophisticated business type airplanes, most flights are normally flown under the ?visual flight rules? and thus are still grounded.

So, we wait while the issues that are keeping the smaller planes from flying are resolved, and all of aviation can return to relative normality. We will keep you posted on our plans right here on the web site so please check back regularly for the latest information. In the interim, we will be updating the site with additional pictures and stories about Carlene and about Amelia when she made the flight in 1928.
