Here’s a little biography on Dr. Carlene Mendieta who flew the Avro Avian in the footsteps of Amelia Earhart.
The woman flying Avro Avian 7083 on the recreation of Amelia Earhart’s Flight Across America was Dr. Carlene Mendieta. Carlene owns three vintage airplanes herself and is an experienced “tail dragger” pilot. Most of her regular flying is out of uncontrolled grass airports in California’s Napa Valley where she seldom has to use a radio. In fact, just like Amelia, Carlene’s favorite airplane does not even have a radio, or even an electrical system for that matter. And like Amelia, Carlene enjoys working on her own airplanes, even on their engines where she does much of her own maintenance
